Lexus Transitions To Synthetic Oil With the introduction of several 2010 model year Lexus vehicles, Lexus is transitioning to 0W-20 Synthetic Oil. In addition to addressing more stringent emission certifications and higher fuel economy requirements, this action comes with significant customer benefits. This includes reduced cost of ownership since fuel economy may increase as much as one half mile per gallon and oil changes may only be needed half as often as with conventional oil. The models these changes effect are the RX350/450h, HS250h, GX460, and the 2011 IS250/250c.
Oil Change Intervals With the superior lubricant qualities synthetic oil possesses, intervals between oil changes have been extended from 6 months/5,000 miles to 12 months/10,000 miles for Lexus models certified with 0W-20 synthetic oil, that operate under normal driving conditions. For special operating conditions, such as regularly driving on dirt or dusty roads, consistently towing or carrying heavy loads, primarily driving short trips in cold weather and/or constantly idling or driving at low speeds for long distances, the 0W-20 oil change interval is 6 months/5,000 miles. In addition, vehicles that are not 0W-20 certified should adhere to their maintenance interval of 6 months/5,000 miles. Owners should continue to check their vehicle’s oil level monthly and top off levels if needed. Since oil specification is based partly on the emissions certification for each Lexus model/engine configuration, 0W-20 certified vehicles must be serviced using this oil in order to maintain certification, mileage estimates and overall performance. When 0W-20 is not available then 5W-20 may be used temporarily, but a 6-month/5,000 mile interval should be followed, and 0W-20 should be used on the next oil change. It is important for owners to be aware that the “maintenance required” light will continue to illuminate every 5,000 miles as an important reminder that routine maintenance such as checking all fluid levels, rotating the tires and inspecting brakes should be performed. As tires and brake components do not wear at prescribed intervals, they should be checked regularly to ensure vehicle safety. The Lexus prescribed tire rotation interval is consistent with the Rubber Manufacturers Association’s (http://www.RMA.org) recommendation of every 5,000 miles.
