It's not really a CVT, in fact, it is not really a variable transmission. It is a constant transmission, not unlike your basic differential. It's not like a conventional transmission in that it does not take one torque and rotational speed in on one end, and send it out at the other end with another torque and speed. It connects an electric motor and a gasoline engine to the wheels in a way in which the wheels always turn as fast as the sum of the motor and the engine multiplied by their respective ratios. "Continously Variable Transmission" I don't think is a good name, even though Toyota uses it and the journalists parrot it. "Hybrid drive" is a much better name, as the system has two inputs and enjoys both their strengths.
